The ABCs of [beta]-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes
Article Abstract:
Intracellular cholesterol is identified as a potential pathogenic link between type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, which might target a single pathway to protect both the [beta]-cell and the vasculature. The analysis has indicated that the treatment of diabetes and atherosclerosis can be simplified by targeting a single pathway, cholesterol efflux mediated by ATP-binding cassette transporter 1 (Abca1).

ARNT misbehavin' in diabetic beta cells
Article Abstract:
Various clinical researches including the comparison of various gene patterns of pancreatic islets of normal and diabetic people show the potent actions of arylhydrocarbon nuclear receptor translocator (ARNT) in regulating the glucose-tolerance and secretion in humans. The results show that the transcription factor ARNT/hypoxia-inducible factor (HIFbeta) reduces considerably with the type 2 diabetes.

Micromanaging insulin secretion
Article Abstract:
The control of insulin transcription and secretion set by strong stimulatory and inhibitory signals, which are finely tuned to the metabolic state with input from neuronal circuits and growth factors, is discussed. A species of microRNA expressed selectively in beta cells targets myotrophin, a cytoplasmec protein promotes exocytosis of insulin granules.
